• Server Was Down

From Mike Dippel@954:895/2 to All on Monday, December 29, 2025 06:31:12
I remotely host both mystic-hobbies.com and hobbylinebbs.com and I just noticed that both were down. I'm not sure how long they were down, but both were probably down due to am unplanned Windows update. Boo, Microsoft!

Hopefully this didn't cause any disruptions.

My apologies. Hopefully 2026 will be better <g>

Damn, I always do that <g>

Years ago, I lived next door to a Cuban family and they invited us over on New Years
Eve to celebrate in the Cuban tradition. I don't recall everything, but it involved tossing
grapes over our shoulders and whatnot.

I had to work a police detail the following day where I would leave the house around 6
    PM to get there. Long story short, I got a flat when I was entering I-95 entrance ramp;
I had the wrong key to the locking wheel lock so I couldn't change the tire; I had to pay
for 2 tow trucks; and I lost the revenue from the detail because I couldn't get there to
    work it.

The next day, the dealer sent a tow truck to my house to tow it to their dealership. They
claimed that they gave me the correct key for the wheel lock, but realized it was the
wrong one once they saw the lock. I was supposed to have green and they gave me
    blue.

Not a great start to the New Year. I never celebrated a Cuban New Years tradition again.

Well said. Back when I owned my own server, I had 80 of my customers websites hosted on it. The server ran Debian Linux. It ran well over 2 years without ever having
to shut down for updates. I only took it down temporarily one time to add more ram.

I couldn't imagine hosting my customers websites on a server that had to reboot at least
    once per month, maybe more.

You'd lose a lot of money because your customers would leave. There will
be other solutions. I'm just a customer in this area, but I can get a
    general idea.

Luckily I never lost any customers because of the server. I had a good run until I turned
65 and told my customers I was retiring. But, that was short-lived. I missed it so much
I started doing it again, but this time with a leased Linux server.

I hope you have a great New Year!
