New Moon
On Saturday, August 23 at 2:06 a.m. EDT or 06:06 UT, which converts to 11:06 p.m. PDT on Friday, the moon will officially pass its new moon phase. At that time our natural satellite will be located in Leo and sit just 1 degree north of the sun. While new, the moon is travelling in the space between Earth and the sun. Since sunlight can only touch the far side of the moon, and the moon is in the same region of the sky as the bright sun, it becomes completely hidden from view from anywhere on Earth for about a day (unless there's a
solar eclipse). On the evenings after the new moon phase, Earth's celestial night-light will shine as a waxing crescent in the western evening sky.
