From Maurice Kinal@1:153/7001 to Andy Alt on Sunday, June 14, 2026 01:29:44
    Hey Andy!

    Linux version 7.0.11-zen1-1-zen (linux-zen@archlinux)
(gcc (GCC) 16.1.1 20260430, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.46.0)
    #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue, 02 Jun 2026 18:26:42 +0000

That doesn't look right. Instead of gcc and probably GNU ld, shouldn't it be rustc and llvm's linker (ld) ?
At the moment I can't compile a kernel with llvm's ld but did manage to compile one with clang and booted it up.

    <Esc>:read /proc/version
    Linux version 7.0.12 (root@itsii) (clang version 22.1.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.46.0.20260210) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sun Jun 14 00:56:44 UTC 2026

This reminds me of Mandrake claim to be the ONLY native clang based distribution which when I loaded their kernel proved to be gcc based. It waasn't long after that they went MIA. Also Debian and their eglibc bullshit but that was different. I had a LFS built with eglibc and despite it working saw absolutely no good reason to ditch glibc.

However I saw a doc about this particular subject and just might take another stab at getting a rustc kernel booting once I figure it out. My motivation you ask? I see a posible chance to one-up archlinux. :::most evil grin:::

    Life is good,

I dunno. Out of my area of experience. Although, I can tell you with absolute confidence that I didn't modify the output.

A challenge like that that sounds like a worthy goal. :)

    Hey Andy!

I can tell you with absolute confidence that I didn't modify the
    output.

It looks legitimate from this angle. I was questioning what makes it a zen kernel and as of my last post on the subject thought my first and probably last attempt, was far more what I believe /proc/version ought to look like given the claim.

A challenge like that that sounds like a worthy goal.

So far I can tell you with much confidence that it was a lot of work and far too much extra bloat. I am sticking with gcc.

I guess this page has a pretty good overview.

    https://linuxvox.com/blog/linux-zen-kernel/

The Linux Zen Kernel is a community-maintained Linux kernel fork. It is built with a focus on enhancing desktop
responsiveness, which is crucial for tasks such as gaming, multimedia playback, and general desktop usage. It
achieves this by integrating various patches and optimizations that are not present in the mainstream Linux
    kernel.

    Hej Andy!

I guess this page has a pretty good overview. https://linuxvox.com/blog/linux-zen-kernel/

Low on the gory details but I suppose that is typical for an overview. Personally I found the kernel's linux-7.1.2/Documentation/rust/quick-start.rst to be far more helpful. The best idea methinks - for those interested in further developemt and deployment would be a rustc/llvm toolchain howto thingy.

Anyhow I managed to successfully build and boot a kernel. However I am currently sticking with gcc and friends to take care of my present kernel compiling needs but will keep an eye open on future developments as far as rust is concerned.

    Het leven is goed,
