Return to 1mhz computing?
Text-only is the way to go. I remember polling email over dialup/POP,
and it worked just fine. Early web pages, also fine. Once companies got
online, downloading an unoptimized gif file with an image map took a
while.
As an aside, if you now try to use a web browser like links to access google.com, instead of getting a text version you get an error message
about needing to update your browser.
This is with using the gui version of links2 on an up-to-date debian box.
duckduckgo.com still works just fine.
There could be some text web browsers that have found a way around that,
but it shows how some companies try to discourage this.
