• JNS Doors

From Gamgee@VERT/PALANTIR to All on Friday, July 03, 2026 15:52:05
    Hello all,

Trying to set up some of the "JNS" doors and I'm stuck. I feel like
I've seen this discussed somewhere already, but I can't find it...

I'm running SBBS on Linux, using (original) 'dosemu' for DOS doors. I'm trying to install the JNS doors that are in the commonly available "bbsfiles.org" archive. I just cannot get them to start properly, and
feel like I've tried all possible setting combos. I did run the "setup" program for the door, but it's weird because of DOS drive letters. If
it matters, I do have plenty of other DOS doors running fine.

The first door I've been trying to set up is the "YACHT" one (dice
game). Would somebody who's got it working be kind enough to post a
copy of your SCFG setup screen, and a paste of your YACHT.CFG file?
Probably any other JNS door would be fine too, as supposedly they're all
set up the same. Thank you in advance!

... Gone crazy, be back later, please leave message.

I don't know if this will help, I run under Windows 11, but have all the JNS doors running. Here's my link to my JNS Yacht setting for SBBS .cfg and the Yacht.cfg file.

Thanks Rick, it may help for sure. It's somewhat different under
Linux/dosemu because of convoluted drive letter assignments, but this
may get me some more clues. Appreciate it.

Another reply after some more work.... Got things going well here now. The tricky part of these doors is the (required) running of the "setup" utility to create the config file. When you factor in the DOSEMU designations of various drive letters, it's kinda weird. Once I got it figured, the rest is easy, although tedious to do that for all 28 doors... :-) Anyway, all good.

If you used DOSEMU2 and my drop in that works perfectly well, it even provides a script to run in a shell to load up the proper environment so you can run DOS setup and configuration programs that games require.

    No faff, no tedium, just:
    e:
    cd \mygame
    setup

    done
    cd ..\nextgame
    config

    done...

I probably should, but am reluctant to "disturb the force" by
switching... as I know what is likely to happen and don't want to get
down that wormhole. Maybe one day when I'm retired (next year).

Well, to be fair, that's exactly what I'm doing, but not with 'dosemu'.
For the setup/config programs I'm just opening DOSBOX and mounting the
doors dir as E:/ and it works the same way. Just a little painful to do
the configuring 28 times (in this case).

Thanks for the reply, one day I'll be convinced to "upgrade"... :-)

Running a setup program first to generate a config file seems fairly common to me. I wouldn't call it 'tricky'.. A while ago, I made a launcher on my BBS machine to let me manually run DOSBox with the same settings & drive mappings that Synchronet uses, so that I can go run any door game setup programs fairly easily.

FWIW: i set up a "blank" dosemu call in my sysop menu so i could load a dosemu session with only the shell running... this way i have a handy emu session i can use to run resets or setup for the doors that need such...

    Name: "DOSEMU command.com"
    Command Line: "command.com"
    Access Requirement: "SYSOP"
    Intercept IO: "Standard"

everything lower is "No" with BBS Drop File set to "None"...
i think that's it... it opens just like a door but you find yourself at the old DOS prompt...

Congrats on your upcoming retirement. I figure I've got another 14 years yet.

Thanks. Sure looking forward to it. It's *early* next year, too.
