So I am posting live on this thing. Very well designed, with every modern idea..like HDMI, or the built in modem emulator. Not bad for a machine I abandoned in the 80's for an Amiga. 8-bit and internet enabled. NEAT.

You must've gotten the Starlite ed. Do you find the lights distracting? I, myself, got the BASIC beige. Mine arrived the 23rd. I'm very satisfied with the hardware side, but for an "Ultimate" system, the BASIC is a let down. I'd hoped they would've used v4.0. Since it's FPGA based, I'm hoping they'll give us the option to update it.

yeah i heard this incarnation is better than the previous revival.

Yea I have been following Perifractics YT channel for years and was very happy to see Commodore back. Seen many videos of the new machine and am actually impressed. I just wish I had the money to get one. Sucks living on a limited budget.

I've thought about buying one, as it looks interesting. I never did use the original Commodore 64, but it may be interesting to buy one to experience sort of what it may have been like to have one back in the day.

There's an emulator for pretty much everything these days. Atari, Tandy, Commodore (8-bit and Amiga). There's even mainframe emulators. One of my favorites is a Tektronix emulator.

I made a raspberry pi ISO with synchronet and mystic.
as long as you use different ports both can be ran on one pi.

Yes, I got the Starlight edition. The lights can be annoying depending where you are sitting. I was initially in my living room and couldn't easily read the keyboard...and after all these years I really would need to given how different the commodore keyboard layout is. I've since installed it in my computer room and it's much better. You can turn down the lights, or turn them off.

I'm really not a fan of BASIC and they did spend a lot of time making a real spiral bound manual with BASIC examples. Fortunately I've been learning FORTH and there is a fantastic modern FORTH called durexForth out there on github. The junk I have been coding works really well between gForth on Linux and durex.

I have decades worth of .d64 images I have collected, some I imaged directly from my own floppies at one point. They all seem to work.

I'm curious about how the modem emulator works, if it's just a port of Jim Brain's tcpser. Works great to internet enabled BBS systems, but not at all to a local telnet server. I hope future FPGA updates will fix this too.

At the very least it's a nifty little self-contained terminal. My JiffyDOS roms work great...I was surprised that it doesn't have a "warp" mode like VICE does. It emulates the ugly slowness of the 1541 floppy drive very well.

Yes there are slots for actual SID chips. I'm no audiophile so whatever they are doing is just fine for me. You can plug a mini-SD on the motherboard as well for storage. It has the 9-pin plugs for joysticks. Fortunately I have a few of those kicking around as I've got one of those Atari2600+ boxes.

My understanding is the previous versions like TheC64 are just Rpis running VICE, and without accredation at that. VICE has a hall of shame for that and TheC64 is right there on the list.

I watch his channel as well and have been following this new Commodore development for a while. What impresses me is who is on board with this. He has most of the original Commodore 64 design guys back. He even has Dave Haynie and RJ Mical...RJ was part of the original Amiga corporation and helped design the original Amiga. And Haynie is just a genius...worked on the C128, and was designing the next generation chipsets when the original C= collapsed.

They also have Leonard Trameil, son of Jack. I think they are calling him CTO, "Chief Trameil Officer."

All in all, it's quite a crew they have assembled.

Well it has built in wifi and ethernet. Not sure why a Commodore64 would need ethernet, but I think it is compatible with the cartridges they had for that back in the day.

The wifi/ethernet is tied to some kind of internet modem emulator so you can just type in atdtsomehostname:port and it will go there...but it doesn't work to my local telnet server with anything but UltimateTerm, which is included.

In general I still use NovaTerm 9.6, which does 80 columns and ANSI graphics. I used to use that on VICE as well, which had to be shunted through tcpser for modem emulation...it is a lot easier on this box. For some reason they included two 40-column-only terminal programs on the included thumb drive (which is shaped like a cassette tape). NovaTerm is probably the best for any proper BBSing on such a machine.

Oh yes and they also have baked into it something called "CommoServe Search" where you can search for games. I haven't used it much. Seems like the C64U would be an ideal thing for a GOPHER client.

It does a lot to ease the pain of retrocomputing...has all the modern amenities like a nice HDMI out. And if you still have that old hardware, you can still use it as well..it will do that chroma/luma output for video, you can still plug in a 1541 drive or any of the old cartridges (I have two, they still work much to my surprise). Heck even my old "Koalapad" that has been growing mould in a bin for over 35 years still works.

The only fault I give it is that it does nothing to speed up the abysimal performance of the 1541 drive...emulates it to a T in all of it's legendary slowness. But fastloader ROMs are readily available to fix that...I just wish they had included it by default.

Yes I second that, VICE is great. Been using it for years and it does more than the C64. The C128 emulator is great and does VDC graphics. Also emulates the Z-80 so you can run old 8-bit CP/M if you are so inclined.

It is a challenge though to get it working online. You have to mess around with things like tcpser and socat to emulate a modem. It does work however.

i know a guy who got what i think was the commodore64x that ran a version of linux with emulators on it. it was just an small mobo inside a commodore case.

The Atari 8-bit is totally PC incompatible so it runs in an emulator.
The other one is Synchronet.
